As promised, I am reporting back from the panel I participated in titled “Video in the Cloud, Video Everywhere” at Interop Las Vegas, moderated by Andy Howard, of Howard and Associates. Andy led an interesting discussion on the benefits and challenges of cloud based video services.

The panel was well represented by speakers from Cisco, Vidyo and LifeSize. Each of the representatives tried to promote their own technologies and solutions as a best fit for the cloud. (I was reminded of the situation when reading Phil Wainwright’s latest SaaS blog on the misconceptions of the cloud.)

In a recent Wainhouse white paper entitled “Real World Options for Multipoint Videoconferencing” Wainhouse defines two types of cloud based video conferencing services that highlights the major differences in the approach of companies like Blue Jeans compared to the Cisco, Vidyo and LifeSize camps.

Wainhouse defines the following types of providers:

Type 1 - Providers using 3rd party bridges
These providers offer services using 3rd party video bridges that they purchase, install and manage.
Type 2 – Providers leveraging their own platforms
These companies offer hosted bridging services using their own technology / bridging platforms, which allows these providers to offer additional benefits and capabilities.

While most video conferencing vendors today are focused on moving their technology to the cloud through partnerships with service providers (Type 1), Blue Jeans Network (Type 2) purposely built its platform for the cloud.

Our architecture enables us to offer our customers benefits and capabilities beyond what providers using 3rd party bridges can offer:

  1. Unique interoperability not available with any of the off-the-shelf infrastructure vendors.
  2. Frequent and rapid enhancements to the service. Ability to address issues in real-time with no dependency on the video infrastructure manufacturers.
  3. Designed and developed for the cloud with scale and high availability in mind, Blue Jeans built a service distributed across multiple servers that provides unmatched scale combined with redundancy and flexibility.

Don’t take my word for it- visit us on the cloud to experience seamless interoperability.
